(9) Why did Google's Executive Committee reject me? - Quora

I used to be a Googler and I used to serve on a regional hiring committee. It's hard to say why you were rejected in this particular instance. I can tell you many of the reasons that I observed.

(1) Frontend engineers were often rejected because the committees did not think they demonstrated a strong enough CS expertise. I had a VP, for instance, tell me that he was not interested in any UI people who did not have a deep understanding of graph theory. The bias toward "backend folks" becomes more pronounced as you move up the levels of approval. There have been attempts to change this in the last few years.

(2) Candidates with backgrounds that are outside of the Google norm often have trouble. If you are not from a top tier school, for instance, you need to make up for it in either industry accomplishment or by smashing the interview. Often times, the interviewers will give a candidate just-above-the-bar grades, the regional or focus area committee will pass them on with a passing but not totally exciting evaluation. These candidates reach the executive committee and they call bullshit because they look weak compared to everyone else in the stack.
