Uber is tweaking its ride-hailing app to help its drivers pick up passengers at Reagan National and Dulles International airports as the company works on an agreement to allow drivers to stay on airport property to wait for rides — a privilege reserved to individual cab drivers and taxi companies that pay large fees for permits to curb access.
As WAMU 88.5 reported in February, available Ubers no longer show up on the app on airport ground — a geo-fencing measure implemented by the tech company to abide by rules established by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).
Drivers used to hang out on or near the arrival decks, ready to immediately respond to ride requests from passengers whose flights just touched down. But such trips are supposed to "pre-arranged," meaning the ride-hailing drivers have to stay outside the airport territory waiting for pings. At Dulles, where the airport property is enormous, Uber drivers were pushed 10 or 15 minutes away, tempting travelers to eschew the app for a regular, but more expensive, cab at the taxi line.
