D2) Interestingly, L6 employees who consistently exceed/strongly exceed expectations actually end up receiving higher merit increases, bonus payouts and refresher grants than do L7 employees who simply meet expectations. If there actually is a differential between the salary you received in being hired at L6 and that which you'd have had if hired at L7 (it's not a given that there is, incidentally), that gap will quickly close.  Further, those bigger refresher grants you receive for exceeding expectations at L6 add up, and inevitably will account for a far greater portion of your overall compensation than your base salary ever will (whenever you read a news article about how some Google employee's annual income is in the 7-figure range, it's due to their accumulation of equity grants, not base salary).
