(15) What is the role of a partner engineer at Facebook? - Quora

I'm a Partner Engineer at Facebook.  I was the first one at Facebook and helped to create the position.  I also wrote that responsibilities and requirements list that you see below :)

In a nutshell, I'm an engineer but I work with our partners.  My job is to make sure that all of our partners are successful in adding Facebook features using our APIs or by helping create new features that can be leveraged widely.

When someone asks what I do, I generally use the example of a Mobile Phone.  I need to make sure that Facebook has a presence on every phone produced by [manufacturer X] and that that experience is awesome.  I'm the technical person, that works with their engineers, to make that happen.  We have about 15 Partner Engineers working across different products now.

It's a really fun job and I love it.  It bridges engineering, business development, project management, and about a million other skill sets.  Also, because we maintain such a startup atmosphere, the work is constantly changing and really rapidly paced.  I work closely with our world-class engineers but I try to shield them as much as possible and I'd rather fall on a grenade before let one of our engineers.

Before Facebook, I spent a couple years at Google as a Sales Engineer.  The roles are similar, but Facebook moves WAY faster and is WAY more fun.
